The main objective of WETWINE is to promote the rational use of resources and their recovery, limiting the generation of waste and soil and water pollution in South-West Europe.

The WETWINE project has thereforce built a pilot plant in southern Galicia (Spain) based on the combination of an anaerobic system and constructed wetlands for water and sludge treatment that will allow this treatment system to be tested, adapting the design and operation strategies to the characteristics and special features of the winery’s wastewater, verifying the operating conditions at different times of the year.

The results obtained from the pilot plant, as well as from the information gathered in the 12 regions where the project is being implemented have allowed us to obtain some interesting results and very useful information for the wine industry.

The WETWINE software makes it possible to evaluate the technical, economic and environmental impact simply and quickly, an approach to the optimal configuration of the WETWINE system being simulated on the basis of each winery’s characteristics.

The WETWINE project is committed to a treatment and recovery system for wine production waste based on low-cost natural technology. WETWINE has validated a model for the management of wine effluents through constructed wetlands that allow both the treatment of wastewater for reuse as irrigation and the recovery of the resulting sludge by obtaining a fertilizer.
